The Koreshans and the river
Followers of Cyrus Teed, the Koreshan Unity, settled along the spring-fed Estero River in 1894; their site is now the Koreshan State Historic Site. Most settlement stayed near the river until the 1970s. Estero became a village on December 31, 2014. Coconut Point and Hertz Arena, home of the Florida Everblades, are here, and Southwest Florida International Airport is less than 5 miles north.
