From a river fort to a county seat
The fort that gave the city its name was built in 1850 on the Caloosahatchee and named for Abraham Charles Myers. Manuel A. Gonzalez founded the community in 1866, and the town incorporated in 1885 with 349 residents. Today it's the Lee County seat, home to the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. Hurricane Ian caused catastrophic damage here on September 28, 2022.

Rules that apply
The city issues its own permits, so ask Fort Myers about tree, clearing and grading rules. State rules on stormwater, burning, risky trees and Sunshine 811 apply everywhere. See permits.
Requests also come from Cape Coral, Lehigh Acres, Estero. All areas.
